One day: pick one boat ride. Two days: both can work if the rest of the itinerary changes perspective.
The short answer
Choose Trang An if you want a larger, more structured heritage landscape with cave passages and temple stops. Choose Tam Coc if you prefer an open river, rice-field atmosphere and the convenience of being right beside Tam Coc village.
If you have two or more days, doing both can make sense. If you have only one day, choose one boat trip and use the remaining time for a viewpoint, history or a smaller local experience.
What feels different on the water
Tam Coc is visually tied to the agricultural valley around the Ngo Dong River; the rice-field relationship is part of the appeal. Trang An feels more enclosed by karst valleys and follows organized routes through the wider UNESCO landscape.
Neither is “more authentic” in a simple sense. They are managed attractions with different geography and pacing.
Which is easier to combine
Tam Coc is easy to combine with Bich Dong, village cycling, a local cultural stop or an evening in the main tourist area. Trang An naturally pairs with Hoa Lu and can also be combined with Hang Mua if you start early and manage the heat.
Avoid adding another long boat trip on the same day unless boats are genuinely the main reason you came.
Choose by travel style
First-time visitor wanting the broad UNESCO landscape: Trang An. Photographer visiting in rice season and staying in the village: Tam Coc. Family wanting shorter transfers from a Tam Coc hotel: Tam Coc may be simpler. Traveler who dislikes repeating experiences: pick either one, then do something completely different next.
Let the last part of the day be the easy part.
